How to Make 5th Grade a Super Year!!
What skills will help you succeed in our class this year?
1. Read, Read, Read!!! :
Reading every day increases vocabulary, which in turn increases comprehension and understanding.
*If a student starts reading for 20 minutes per night in Kindergarten, by the end of 6th grade, Student A will have read for the equivalent of 60 school days, Student B will have read for 12 school days and Student C will have read for 3 days.
Want to be a better reader? Simply read....find what types of books interest you and read as much as you can!!!
2. Fluency is your friend!! :
Please have your student read out loud for 5-10 minutes every night!!…it’s like learning to dribble a basketball, you have to practice the skill to get better. As a student becomes a more fluent reader, they are able to think about "what" they are reading instead of "how" to read the words.
-Other ideas to help fluency:
*use an egg timer or stop watch to keep time
*if your TV has close captioning, turn off the sound and turn on the close captioning and let your child “read” their favorite TV show.
3. HOMEWORK IS IMPORTANT!!!! :
Your student will bring home a homework outline each Monday. This outline will have homework for each day of the week. Please sign the outline when your student has completed each nights homework and have your student return the outline to school each Friday.
*If your student is taking more than 1 hour to complete their homework every evening, please contact me and we can work with fixing the situation.
4. Basic Math Concepts Must be Mastered!!
Your student must be able to:
* add and subtract one digit numbers in their head
* tell time to the minute using an analog (not digital) clock
* addition with regrouping
* subtraction with borrowing
* multiplication facts 0-12
*division facts 0-12
-- 5th grade math is built on your student having mastered these basic math concepts: Think of these facts as being the foundation on which we build the new 5th grade skills and concepts that your student will be introduced to this year.
5. Write a strong and detailed paragraph!!
**Your student must be able to:
-Write a 5-7 sentence paragraph: This includes a topic sentence, detail sentences and a conclusion sentence. Capitalization, punctuation, grammar and spelling rules must be followed. Each paragraph needs to have one main idea.
*These are great areas for you to help your student improve their academic success at home!!! Please contact me here at school if you ever have any concerns or questions. Thank you!!!!!
