Using Flexible Seating to Create a Student Centered Classroom
Last year was my first experience with flexible seating: I moved out the traditional desks and moved in a combination of standing desks, refurbished drafting tables and larger rectangular tables. I added different types of seating such as stools, benches and wobble stools. I also set up a storage system for the students personal school supplies. As the year went on, we figured out what worked well, what worked a little and what needed to be changed. My goal was to create a classroom that supported active and engaged learning.
Each day, the students had the choice to pick what seat they wanted to sit in. They could choose from standing desks, group tables with chairs, group tables with stools or benches, wobble stools, pillows, etc. This new environments allowed each student to choose the type of seat in which they felt the most comfortable. This is important because when each of us feels comfortable, we are able to focus better which means we can learn better. This flexible arrangement also allowed us to implement more flexible learning chances in which the students would work together with partners or groups to create and complete projects which supported the learning objectives which we were focusing on in our class. In our end of the year survey, the students all reported liking the freedom and responsibility they felt being able to choose their own seat and be able to move around during the school day.
We will be in a different classroom this year but we moved our flexible furniture with us to the new room upstairs. We will also be adding some new seating to our classroom to give the students even more choices to help support their learning experience in our classroom as we moved towards creating our student centered classroom.
